What is Sustainable Development?
What Does Sustainable Development Mean?
" Sustainable development is concerned with the development of a society where the costs of development are not transferred to future generations, or at least an attempt is made to compensate for such costs" (Pearce, 1993).
What Are the Three Pillars of Sustainability?
The three pillars of sustainability are the environment, society,
and the economy, those were first mentioned in the Brundtland report in 1987. Sustainable development is built
on top of those 3 pillars because it can be achieved only when environmental
protection, social equity, and economic profitability coexist without one area
taking over any of the others.
The environmental pillar of
sustainable development involves regulations, laws, and other tools used to
deal with environmental facts and issues such as the
management of land, freshwater, oceans, forests, air, natural resources, and
wildlife.
The social pillar refers to initiatives,
public policies, planning, and regulations supporting social issues. These
include things such as fighting poverty, social justice, peace, promoting
diversity, quality of living, access to healthcare, education, community
development, cultural sustainability and heritage, and some
aspects of religion.
The economic pillar of sustainability is
essential for the business’s existence: a business needs to be economically
viable to be sustainable. At the same time, a sustainable business should look
at profitability as just one component of the company’s strategy.
Example of a sustainable development practice:
BAY AREA GREEN TOURS
ABOUT BAY AREA GREEN TOURS
Our Mission is to inspire and educate youth and adults to build a more
enduring, resilient, and just future by creating interactive experiences that highlight
the regenerative economy in action.
We show you the inspirational models to encourage the urgent action
needed to combat the Climate Crisis. Our volunteer-based non-profit highlights
innovative regenerative solutions of local organizations through engaging,
educational and hands-on learning experiences in collaboration with local organizations
and leaders. We have been focused during Covid on showcasing our climate hero
partners through virtual tours, team building events and videos, and slowly
pivoting to offering in-person experiences starting in Summer 2022.
Since 2008, we’ve organized innovative experiences highlighting environmental justice and sustainable solutions that minimize the impact of the Climate Crisis, from regenerative agriculture to zero waste food systems, LEED Green buildings to urban farms. We have educated thousands of professionals and students about how they can alter their food choices and daily life to lead a more sustainable and resilient lifestyle. We highlight and share the latest positive eco-solutions our partners are utilizing to combat the injustices of climate change, improve food security, build community and create career opportunities. We engage with and share stories from diverse local leaders working on the frontlines of environmental activism. Your donations will help us fund educational programming.
